These gorgeous boys, Bertie and Lucian, are bonded and should be adopted together. They were found together abandoned in a home, quite a while after their human had gone to a nursing home. It appeared that no one knew for some time that the cats were left behind.

The person who found Lucian said the following: "He likes to give headbutts. Doesn't necessarily like laps but does love to be petted. He has the softest fur of any animal I've ever known. He's a bit adventurous and mischievous. He's a lovely boy. They both are the sweetest, bestest boys. I don't know how long they were left alone. They managed to rip into a large food bag so they didn't starve to death, but they were neglected. They're remarkably resilient though."

Lucian is an incredibly soft, black Maine Coon Mix boy with beautiful green eyes. The vet estimates him to be approximately 5 years old. Lucian is the smaller of the two cats, though still somewhat on the large side at 11.4 pounds plus lots of fluff. He is the more sensitive and easily frightened one, though he is also loving and affectionate once he learns to trust you. He "talks" to you, and his toys/"prey" (LOL), with the most adorable twitter!

Lucian has a fun-loving, playful, goofy side. He twitters/trills as he plays, greets you and while anticipating meals. His favorite toy is a laser pointer. He also loves interactive toys he can play with you. He loves to hide, run, and play under area rugs. That's right - UNDER! It is hilarious! Bertie will sometimes join him. As funny as this is it also could be a trip hazard, so these boys may not be for a home with someone disabled or elderly where tripping is of specific concern. Another option such as a cat Ripple Rug is highly recommended, as well as kitty tunnels. Lucian also prefers to be covered when in a carrier - he will burrow under the mat if nothing else is available.

It has become clear that Lucian does not do well with change and needs a very quiet, low-activity, low-stress home with very patient gentle adopter(s) who are willing to provide the calm consistent environment that he needs. When moved to their foster home, Lucian hid most of the time for weeks! His tendency to appear timid/shy/aloof, frightened, and insecure seems to be based on anxiety issues. Pheromone and calming aides need to be used when traveling, transitioning, or any changes are going on in the household. Their Original Finder said that when preparing to come to their foster home both cats were extremely difficult to get into carriers and that they were quite upset about it. They then traveled quite a distance in the car. Lucian seemed particularly traumatized by that whole experience - on top of all they had been through prior. Sadly, he has difficulty trusting new humans and needs a tremendous amount of patience, loving persistence and routine to rebuild his sense of security. Once he feels safe and secure he comes out of his shell and it's like he's a whole new cat. Once you win Lucian over you will have a friend for life!

Bertie and Lucian would do best as the only two pets in the household. No children nor dogs. Nothing noisy nor unpredictable. Their home should not have drop ceilings anywhere (see also Bertie's profile). Lucian should have plenty of safe "cave dweller" type places to hide, both low and high, where you can still reach him when necessary.

At the same time, Lucian's ideal home should provide ample space and opportunity to run, get his zoomies on, and play to his heart's content. To summarize, HE should be the noisiest most active thing in the household, LOL!

In their foster home, they've learned to overcome food insecurities and gradually build up to a healthy weight. Both can be quite picky when it comes to food, which seems odd for what they've been through. It took an extra long time to find foods they would eat consistently and gradually get them to eat an appropriate amount after nearly starving. If they don't like the food, they will not eat enough. Potential adopters should be willing to keep them on a high-quality, no-kibble, diet such as all-wet food in a healthy variety of meat sources. Any additions or changes to their diet must be very gradual. Seeming to stem from their food insecurities, they tend to act out aggressively toward other pets whom they may see as a threat to their resources.

These boys have been happy with natural litters, showing a strong preference for walnut shell litter. They prefer their litterboxes be kept quite clean. They did eliminate outside the box when they had upset tummies from parasites - a bed became their target of choice. So, if they do relieve themselves elsewhere, that is a good indication a vet check is in order. They may also go right outside the box if they don't like the litter.

Lucian is currently located near Lake Ariel, PA. We would like to keep them within 200 miles of their location, but each application will be looked at on a case-by-case basis. If the adopter does not meet halfway, an $85.00 transport fee will apply.

Lucian's adoption fee is $175.00 and Bertie's adoption fee is $150.00. MCR does offer a $25 discount on the adoption fees when you adopt a bonded pair. The total for both boys would be $300.00.

Lucian's Adoption Fee includes the following: neuter, updated FVRCP Vaccine, Rabies Vaccine, Wellness Exam, Flea Treatment, Dewormer, and Microchip.

These boys are so worth the small effort that they need! They are both so sweet once you break through their barriers and will reward you 10xs over, and then some! They are worth going the extra mile for!
