THE FOLLOWING CAT IS BEING CARED FOR IN A LOVING MCR FOSTER HOME.

Mazie: a beautiful, tiny work-in-progress! She is an itty-bitty-kitty: very slight with enormous green eyes and gorgeous dilute calico coloration. Mazie's coat has grown back nicely after a bout of ringworm, and her good health is helping her gain confidence.

Mazie was little more than a kitten herself when she wound up raising a litter of 4. Between protecting her babies, lack of socialization, and horrible ringworm treatments, Mazie never had a reason to trust people. When she and her kittens came to Baltimore from a high-kill shelter in Kentucky, she would hiss and hide in her litter pan, hoping no one would see her. 

Even at that terrifying time, Mazie was very gentle-- never bit or scratched. We quickly discovered that she liked being petted. She closes her eyes and relaxes during head-scratches or cheek-rubs. She still avoids being picked up, but if it does happen she'll stick around on your lap to enjoy a massage. (In the last week, Mazie has started hopping onto my desk and I can see her trying to work up the nerve to ask for pets...)

Mazie got out of ringworm-quarantine and found the space and freedom she needed to figure people out. She began venturing out from under the bed for longer periods every day. As she got braver, she showed more of her silly side: wrestling with her kittens, rolling around on scratchy rugs, and tearing up and down the cat tree like a manic squirrel. This cat is also whip-smart; in about 2 days she learned all our routines so she could determine when and how to join in the household activities. We were amazed when, after just a few days with us, she peeked around the corner at the mention of her nickname (Mumma-Cat).

Unlike her kittens, Mazie was too shy to play with strings or feathers. But then came the laser-pointer. She *loves* the laser pointer and bounds into the room when she hears the laser's button being pressed. 

Though she is timid, the social progress she is making every day suggests that Mazie can be a fun, attentive lap-cat. An adopter who gives Mazie time and space to get used to her surroundings will enjoy a gratifying transformation from fearful to affectionate. If you are interested in offering this beleaguered young mother a chance to finally live her best life, we hope you will reach out! 

Because Mazie is skittish, she would prefer a home that is quiet, with predictable sounds and routines. Small children will not work for her. She is submissive but totally fine around other friendly cats. Mazie would love to go home with one (or more) of her kittens, but this isn't a requirement.
